Fishin' for Facts: Sharks Reproduction

Sharks have internal fertilization. After fertilization, sharks may have three different kinds of embryo development - depending on the species.

Some are oviparous, which means they lay eggs.

Some are viviparous, which means pups are born live.

Others are ovoviviparous. This can best be described as a combo of oviparous and viviparous. The embryo, which is attached to a yolk sac (to gets its nutrients) develops in the female.   After it matures it is then born live.
