White sharks have been known to bite or attack humans. These few species hunt larger marine mammals, so it is quite possible they've confused the person with their prey.
Scientists think the way a great white hunts is to swim in for a quick bite then back off, waiting for the prey to become weak from the injury. Then the shark returns and eats the prey whole or in chunks.
